After having worked with hundreds of Etsy sellers, the #1 thing that I always see when I take a look at their shops is that they have not optimized their shop for SEO.

After all, all of us, myself included when I first started, thought all I needed to do was create pretty products, list them and the buyers would start pouring into my shop.  It should be that simple, right?

WHAT IS SEO?  

Etsy SEO, or Etsy Search Engine Optimization, refers to the process of optimizing your Etsy shop and product listings to improve their visibility within Etsy's search results. The goal is to enhance the chances of your products being discovered by potential buyers who are actively searching for items similar to what you offer. Etsy's search algorithm takes various factors into account when ranking and displaying search results, and optimizing for these factors can significantly impact the visibility of your shop.

Key elements of Etsy SEO include:

  1. Keywords:

    • Identifying and incorporating relevant keywords into your product titles, descriptions, tags, and attributes is crucial. These keywords should reflect what potential buyers might search for when looking for products similar to yours.  Using a good keyword tool such as makerwords.com helps simplify the process.
  2. Product Titles:

    • PRO TIP:  Put your most targeted keywords in the front of the title as this is where the algorithm mostly pulls from.

    • PRO TIP: If a long-tail keyword doesn't fit within the 20 characters, you can break them up into two tags.  The algorithm can combine keywords.

    • Choosing the most appropriate categories for your products ensures that Etsy's algorithm understands the context of your listings.
    • PRO TIP:  Think of your categories as an extra tag.  They should use keywords that people are searching for.
  6. Attributes:

    • Completing all relevant product attributes provides additional information about your items and aids in search result accuracy.
    • PRO TIP:  The more attributes you can fill in the more the Etsy algorithm can send you the best targeted customers that are likely to convert to sales.
  7. Photography:

    • Uploading high-quality images that showcase your products from various angles contributes to a positive shopping experience and can indirectly impact search rankings.
    • PRO TIP:  Your images are a great way to explain your product in more detail as well as an ideal place to show coordinating products or complimentary products
  8. Customer Reviews and Ratings:

    • Positive reviews and high ratings can enhance your shop's reputation and may positively influence its visibility in search results.
    • PRO TIP:  Always respond to negative reviews, but only do so in the messages.  Once you respond on the actual review the customer will be unable to change it.  Give it some time and see if you can make it right.  Many times the customer will change the review.
  9. Shipping Information:

    • Clearly stating shipping costs and delivery times is essential for providing accurate information to potential buyers and may impact your shop's visibility.
    • PRO TIP:  Etsy will hurt your ranking if you consistently ship late.  Be sure to adjust your times to accurately reflect your shipping needs.
  10. Shop Updates:

    • Frequently adding new products or updating existing listings can signal to Etsy's algorithm that your shop is active and may positively impact visibility.
    • PRO TIP:  The algorithm rewards sellers who work on their shop daily. Whether it's adding new products, optimizing or renewing listings, it all helps
